Celebrating achievement: Australia Day Honours

Australia Day Honours are well known as the highest honours a citizen can receive.

We wish to congratulate the following people with a connection to the Faculty of Law for their well-deserved Australia Day Honours recognising their significant contributions to Australian society.


Professor Stephen Parker AO
Honour received: Officer (AO) in the General Division of the Order of Australia for distinguished service to tertiary education through administrative, academic and representational roles, and as a leader in the growth and development of the University of Canberra. Professor Parker is a former Dean and Professor of Law (1999-2003), and Senior Deputy Vice-Chancellor at Monash (2003-2007). He is currently Vice-Chancellor and President at the University of Canberra.   
Connection to the Faculty of Law: Former Dean and Professor of Law (1999-2003) and Senior Deputy Vice-Chancellor at Monash (2003-2007).

The Honourable Justice Stephen Kaye AM
Honour received: Member (AM) in the General Division of the Order of Australia for significant service to the law and to the judiciary, particularly in the area of Indigenous social justice and cultural awareness.  
Connection to the Faculty of Law: Law alumnus.

The Honourable Dr Ross Sundberg AM
Honour received: Member (AM) in the General Division of the Order of Australia for significant service to the law as a judge, reporter and educator.
Connection to the Faculty of Law: Law alumnus and a former Senior Teaching Fellow at Monash (1960s).

The Honourable Peter Ross Gray AM
Honour received: Member (AM) in the General Division of the Order of Australia for significant service to the judiciary through the Federal Court of Australia, to legal education, and as a mentor.
Connection to the Faculty of Law: Adjunct Professor of the Faculty of Law.

Mr Greg Byrne PSM
Honour received: Public Service Medal for outstanding public service to the community in the area of criminal law.  
Connection to the Faculty of Law: Law alumnus.

We also congratulate our current Vice-Chancellor and President, Professor Edward Byrne on his Australia Day Honour.

Monash University Vice-Chancellor and President, Professor Edward Byrne AC
Honours received: Companion of the Order of Australia (AC) for eminent service to tertiary education, particularly through leadership and governance roles with Monash University, to biomedical teaching and research, as a scientist and academic mentor, and as a contributor to improved global health.
