Celebrating achievement: Law alumni and Faculty staff successes

The Monash Law Faculty wishes to congratulate, recognise and celebrate the following Law alumni and Faculty academic staff on their recent and varied career achievements.

Law Alumna Ms Deborah Glass OBE appointed new Victorian Ombudsman

Ms Deborah Glass OBE
Ms Deborah Glass OBE was appointed as the new Victorian Ombudsman in March this year for a term of 10 years. She is the first female to be appointed to this role in the 41 years of its existence.

Ms Glass comes to this position from her previous 10 year term at the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) of England and Wales, where she was Deputy Chair since 2008. Ms Glass was also the IPCC Commissioner for London and during this period she was responsible for many high profile misconduct and criminal investigations. She was awarded an OBE for services to the IPCC in the New Year Honours List 2012.

After practising as a lawyer in Melbourne and working at Citicorp Investment Bank in Switzerland, Ms Glass was appointed to the Hong Kong Securities and Investment Commission in 1989 when the Commission was established. Ms Glass later became the Senior Director and had a key role in improving the standards for the Hong Kong investment management industry.

In 1998, Ms Glass held the position of Chief Executive of the Investment Management Regulatory Organisation in London, a self-regulatory body, and oversaw its merge into the Financial Services Authority.

Ms Glass was then appointed to the UK Police Complaints Authority in 2000 until joining the IPCC.

Law Alumnus Mr Julian Burnside AO QC to receive the 2014 Sydney Peace Prize

Monash Law alumnus, Australian barrister, human rights advocate and author, Mr Julian Burnside AO QC, has been selected to receive the 2014 Sydney Peace Prize.

The Prize will be awarded at the 2014 City of Sydney Peace Prize Lecture to be given by Mr Burnside at Sydney Town Hall on 5 November 2014.

The Sydney Peace Prize is Australia's only annual international prize for peace and celebrates inspiring people and their achievements. Read more.



Law Alumna Appointed the 2014 Australian Youth Representative to the UN

Ms Laura John
Ms Laura John, a Monash Law alumna, was appointed to the role of Australian Youth Representative to the United Nations from a pool of 200 applicants in March this year. Ms John will give a voice to young Australians through her international campaign as Australian Youth Ambassador which will conclude with an address to the UN General Assembly in New York later this year. Some of the key issues facing young Australians which Ms John will include on her agenda are homelessness, mental health, same sex marriage and climate change.

Ms John has already had some significant experience in youth leadership roles, having only recently graduated with a Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Laws from Monash in May 2014. She was the spokesperson for Victorian Youth in 2011 when selected to be the Victorian Young member for National Youth Week. Ms John interned with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees and volunteered as a paralegal with the Asylum Seeker Resource Centre. In addition, she had a three-month placement with Human Rights First, a human rights organisation in New York, as part of the annual Castan Centre Global Intern program in 2012. Frank Knox Memorial Fellowship awarded to Law alumna

Dr Fiona Lander
Dr Fiona Lander (MBBS(Hons)/LLB(Hons) 2009), an accomplished lawyer and doctor was recently awarded a prestigious Frank Knox Memorial Fellowship to Harvard University.

Dr Lander will complete a Masters of Public Health specializing in Law and Public Health, commencing in September this year. Read more here and here.
  

 

 

 

 

Law Alumnus awarded Fulbright Scholarship

Dr Vinay Rane
Dr Vinay Rane, (MBBS 2001, BmedSci 2001, LLB 2001, PgradDipLegPractice 2001, LLM 2003) recently won a Fulbright Professional Scholarship for study and research at leading institutions in the United States in 2014.

Dr Rane will use the Scholarship to investigate the provision of obstetric services to disadvantaged women’s groups at the New York Department of Health, New York State University at Albany, and the School of Public Health at Harvard University. Read more.

  




John Monash Scholarship awarded to Law Alumna

Monash Law alumna, Ms Alexandra Readhead (LLB(Hons) 2011) was one of 15 recipients of the annual postgraduate John Monash Scholarships. This scholarship is awarded by the General Sir John Monash Foundation and was presented by the Prime Minister. Ms Readhead will use the scholarship to undertake a Masters in Public Policy at Oxford’s Blavatnik School of Government. Read more.

 

LLD for the Honourable Justice Pagone

The Honourable Justice Tony Pagone (LLB 1979, DipEd 1977, BA 1976) recently received an LLD from the University of Melbourne for a ‘thesis’ being a series of publications on the Australian general anti-tax avoidance provisions.

 

Law Alumnus is a Co-Winner of the 2013 AIPJ Essay Competition

Mr James Longden, Monash Law alumnus, was one of two joint winners of the 2013 Australian Intellectual Property Journal (AIPJ) essay competition. The AIPJ considers intellectual property law developments and matters within Australia and internationally. The winning essays will be published in an upcoming issue of the AIPJ.

The judging panel consisted of the Honourable Professor William Gummow AC QC (former High Court Justice), Professor Sam Ricketson (The University of Melbourne), and Ms Ann Dufty (founding Editor of AIPJ). The winners were announced by Thomson Reuters and Dr David Lindsay, the General Editor of the AIPJ and Associate Professor at the Law Faculty. Read more.

 

Awards for Best PhD theses

Dr Eric Windholz, Faculty of Law, has received a prestigious Mollie Holman Medal for best PhD thesis for Law for his thesis ‘Harmonisation of social regulation in the Australian federation: a case study of occupational health and safety’.

Castan Centre Deputy Director receives VCAT Author Award

Associate Professor Paula Gerber, the Deputy Director of the Castan Centre for Human Rights Law, received a VCAT Author Award in March which recognised her outstanding contribution as an author and to the Victorian community. This is only the second award of this kind to be presented by VCAT. Read more.

The Governor of Victoria, His Excellency the Honourable Alex Chernov AC QC, has been conferred with a Doctor of Laws honoris causa for his significant contribution and dedication to the legal profession and legal education in Australia. The Governor held many high level positions in both legal and academic settings before becoming the Governor of Victoria in 2011. Read more.

As a Law alumnus, The Honourable Mark Birrell also provided an inspiring and encouraging Graduation Address to our most recent Law graduates in our first 50th Anniversary Law Graduation Ceremony in May this year.
